Plan Your Rhode Island Vacation: Small State, Big Opportunities-Rhode Island

Great Cities to Visit in Rhode Island:

  •         Providence

  •         Newport

  •         Cranston

  •         Pawtucket

  •         Warwick

5 Fun Things to Enjoy in Rhode Island:

  •         Newport Mansions: Nine breathtaking mansions maintained by the Preservation Society of Newport County once served as summer vacation homes, but now draw upwards of 800,000 tourists. Most famous is The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style mansion.

  •         Waterfire Providence: From March through November, the city of Providence lights braziers along a four-mile stretch of the Woonasquatucket River, which flows right through the city. With carnival events, vendors, and artists up and down the river, each lighting offers much to experience.

  •         Roger Wheeler State Beach: With lifeguards on duty, 63 picnic tables, and a children’s playground, this beach provides a family-friendly alternative to the town beach in Narragansett.

  •         Benefit Street: Take a trip into the 1780s along this 1.2-mile street of historical houses, an outdoor museum displaying some of Providence’s most beautiful architecture. The John Brown House is one of the biggest draws, a Georgian-style home built in 1788.

  •         Providence Children’s Museum: A great place for kids ages 3-12: Crawl through tunnels, dig for fossils, climb a 24-foot tower, learn how bridges work, build with blocks, play with toy boats, and picnic in the children’s garden.

Major Convention Centers:

  •         Rhode Island Convention Center: Located in the heart of Providence, one of America’s most walkable cities, the RICC contains 100,000 square feet of exhibition space, 20,000 square feet of ballroom space, and 23 meeting rooms.

  •         Whispering Pines Conference Center: For smaller events, this conference center is located on 2,300 acres in a country setting—a perfect destination for small conferences, business meetings, team-building retreats, and weddings.

Two national parks and 773 listings on the National Register of Historic Places.

  •         Blackstone River Valley: It’s one of America’s newest national parks, created in 2014. While some parts are still under construction, visitors can explore four historical mill villages, ride bikes on the Blackstone River Bikeway, and tour a transportation museum.

  •         Roger Williams National Memorial: The park memorializing the state’s founder contains restored historical buildings, monuments, and two gardens: a Native American garden, and a colonial kitchen garden.

Racing Fans!

  • While Rhode Island is not home to any NASCAR-sanctioned races, the Seekonk Speedway—“the action track of the East”—is located just one mile across the Massachusetts border, minutes from downtown Providence.
