Vacation in West Virginia: Truly “Almost Heaven”-West Virginia

Great Cities to Visit in West Virginia:

  •          Charleston

  •          Huntington

  •          Morgantown

  •          Parkersburg

  •          Wheeling

5 Fun Things to Enjoy in West Virginia:

  •          Snowshoe Mountain: The premier ski resort in the mid-Atlantic and southeast, the uniquely bowl-shaped mountainside and high elevation (nearly 5,000 feet) draw large crowds throughout the winter. Snowshoe receives an average of 180 inches of snow annually.

  •          Whitewater Rafting on the New River: Numerous whitewater rafting operations run up and down the New River, but Adventures on the Gorge offers perhaps the greatest variety of experiences, from family-friendly rides to thrilling experiences for the adventurous.

  •          Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: In operation from 1864 until 1994, this beautiful but creepy building now hosts daily tours—including ghost tours. It is the second-largest hand-cut sandstone building in the world, second only to the Kremlin in Russia.

  •          The Greenbrier Resort: Numerous presidents used this sprawling, luxurious resort as a getaway, and there’s even a secret bunker that was designed as a Cold-War era relocation center for Congress. Beautiful accommodations are matched by a variety of activities, including golf, tennis, horseback riding, and even falconry.

  •          Seneca Rocks: The only “true peak” on the east coast (accessible only to advance rock climbers), this crag is one of the most astonishing scenic attractions in the state and a must-see for all visitors to West Virginia.

Major Convention Centers:

  •          Charleston Civic Center: A complex that includes a coliseum, a convention center with 100,000 square feet of exhibition spaces, a conference center, a theater, and an auditorium, this place can host nearly any type of event.

  •          Glade Springs: This luxurious resort is the choice destination for conferences of fewer than 500 attendees, business meetings, and weddings.

Six national parks and 1,017 listings on the National Register of Historic Places.

  •          New River Gorge: One of the continent’s oldest rivers, the New River tumbles through one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi. Visitors can enjoy whitewater rafting, camping, hiking, and numerous historical sites and educational activities.

  •          Harpers Ferry: This quaint little town located on the WV-MD-VA border was the site of John Brown’s famous raid on the armory in 1859. Sitting at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, the park offers opportunities for whitewater rafting, tubing, fishing, canoeing, and more.

Racing Fans!

While West Virginia does not host any NASCAR-sanctioned races, the Ona Speedway near Huntington is a former NASCAR track that is still in operation.

  •          3/8-mile asphalt oval—West Virginia’s only asphalt track—with weekend races from April through August.
